Article: Botox For Young Women
Over 2.4 million Americans received Botox injections in 2008 according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. A fairly new trend in anti-wrinkle injections is occurring among young women in their 20s, who don’t yet have wrinkles. They use Botox as a wrinkle safeguard—a preventative procedure to ward off future lines and creases.
The Debate on Botox as a Preventative Procedure
There is some debate as to whether or not Botox is an effective medium for preventing wrinkles in young people, because it requires maintenance and repetitive injections just like injections given to older women who actually do have wrinkles. It may also cause the appearance of tightness, or may make no difference in the facial features at all because there is little to nothing to change or improve. Whether or not Botox actually even effectively prevents wrinkles is uncertain. The consensus among many surgeons and doctors is that Botox is a great quick fix for women who are already experiencing signs of aging, but it doesn’t necessarily benefit women who don’t yet have obvious wrinkles or fine lines.
However, as a one-off procedure, many young women report being highly satisfied with the results. Although women in their 20’s don’t typically have permanent frown lines, crow’s feet, or wrinkles, some do enjoy receiving injections to temporarily firm and smooth forehead lines, creases between their eyebrows that appear with certain expressions, or lines that become prominent when they smile or laugh. Receiving Botox injections can lessen the appearance of wrinkles down the road, but the injection regimen needs to be maintained to be effective. The injections are believed to work to prevent wrinkles because they lessen movement in the area of the face where wrinkles would otherwise more readily occur due to frequent furrowing or creasing of the skin.
It should be noted that the Physicians Coalition for Injectable Safety (PCIS) advises that Botox injections should not be provided to anyone under the age of 18.
Injection Risks
Botox is considered a safe treatment for existing frown lines and other off-label uses on other parts of the face for firming purposes when injected by a licensed health professional. According to the PCIS, the risk of experiencing complications associated with a cosmetic injection is 1 in 10,000. Women should be wary of “Botox Parties” and salons that offer cosmetic injections. Always use your best judgment and be aware of the risks involving the injections. It’s best to leave the procedure up to a medical professional.
